Research webinar by EMBL-EBI for Exploring metagenomes to assess microbiomes across the globe
Exploring metagenomes to assess microbiomes across the globe
A metagenome is a sequencing sample of a bulk microbial community, providing a genetic snapshot of the entire microbiome sampled. Metagenomics offers a comprehensive genetic overview of microbial communities, without the limitations of culture-based methods. The introduction of the shotgun method of metagenomics has added the ability to quantify the phylogenetic and functional roles of microbes without primer bias. As sequencing becomes more affordable, shotgun metagenomics is becoming an increasingly popular method for assessing microbiomes. This webinar will offer a brief introduction to metagenomics and discuss various concepts and methods used in modern metagenomics. Specifically, we will explore topics such as using microbial composition as an indicator of ecosystem state, using functional genes as biosensors, and the insights that can be gleaned from genomic structure.

Research webinar by National Institute of Justice for FY 2024 NIJ Graduate Research Fellowship Program registration
FY 2024 NIJ Graduate Research Fellowship Program registration
This webinar will give an overview of NIJ’s Graduate Research Fellowship opportunity, which invites applications for doctoral dissertation research that is relevant to preventing and controlling crime, advancing knowledge of victimization and effective victim services, or ensuring the fair and impartial administration of criminal or juvenile justice in the United States. This solicitation is open to doctoral students in all science and engineering fields. The presenters will discuss program scope, eligibility, application elements, and frequently asked questions. To use the time most efficiently, NIJ encourages participants to review the solicitation and submit any questions they may have in advance and no later than February 12, 2024. Submit your questions to [email protected] with the subject as “Questions for GRF Webinar.” Live captioning will be available.

Research webinar by Cogstate for Strategic Design Decisions in Rare Disease Trials
Strategic Design Decisions in Rare Disease Trials
Adapting Endpoints, Ensuring Data Quality, and Determining Clinical Meaningfulness of Trial Results. Testing new therapeutic candidates in patients with rare diseases presents considerable challenges for clinical trial teams. In this webinar, Dr. Pam Ventola will share methodological approaches for adapting endpoints for rare disease trials and discuss rater training approaches and targeted data quality monitoring methodologies specific to rare disease trials. Dr. Ventola will also outline approaches for supporting the clinical meaningfulness of results in rare disease trials.

Research webinar by The Chartered College of Teaching for Research and teachers: How does research move, around and among teachers
Research and teachers: How does research move, around and among teachers
Research can play an important role in teachers’ professional lives. It can provide insights to understand the experiences of learners, guidance on addressing current priorities, and inspiration for thinking about what else is possible or desirable. This webinar will explore teachers’ experiences of accessing, exchanging and engaging with research and investigate the role of individuals, organisations, texts, and technologies in mediating research. It will consider why some kinds of research move more easily than others and how the key messages from research studies change as they move. The webinar will share findings from the ESRC funded Research Mobilities in Primary Literacy Education project (ES/W000571/1) which is a collaboration between Sheffield Hallam University, Lancaster University, and University of Stirling. Cathy Burnett, Professor of Literacy and Education at Sheffield Institute of Education, Sheffield Hallam University, will be leading the webinar and sharing the research findings.

Research webinar by The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration for Gene Therapy for FTD: What Do I Need to Know?
Gene Therapy for FTD: What Do I Need to Know?
In the last several years, new clinical trials have begun for drugs that can potentially slow or stop the progression of FTD caused by specific genes. Gene therapy and gene editing technologies that have been available for other diseases and conditions hold promise for a treatment for FTD, but, as with all new medical interventions, people have many questions. In this webinar, we will explore the types of interventions being developed for genetic FTD and how to make informed decisions about participating in this type of research. Viewers will be able to understand: What “gene therapy” for FTD means. The major types of gene-related interventions being explored for FTD. What to consider when deciding if this type of research is right for you and your family. Where to go for more information on FTD gene therapy. Additional information on the genetics of FTD, genetic counseling, FTD clinical trials can be found on AFTD’s website.
