The first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term have featured a torrent of education activity. He issued executive orders expanding school choice and demanding changes in how institutions manage gender, antisemitism, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. His team has pursued unprecedented sanctions on Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, while signaling that many other universities could be next. What should we make of all this, in terms of both process and substance? What has the administration gotten right, and what’s it getting wrong?oin AEI’s Frederick M. Public Sector > Government webinar by ProPublica for Investigating the Department of Government Efficiency
Investigating the Department of Government Efficiency
As President Donald Trump dismantles the federal government one agency at a time, he has handed Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, unprecedented power to cut and reshape the U.S. bureaucracy. Trump established the Department of Government Efficiency, which is overseen by Musk, in January with the goal of reducing federal spending and streamlining government operations. In the spirit of public accountability, ProPublica is identifying the staffers working for this highly secretive group. By late March, we profiled 66 staffers helping DOGE, which has cut humanitarian programs domestically and abroad and fired tens of thousands of federal workers. (Some of these staffers have ties to Musk’s private enterprises.) Despite DOGE’s mission to reduce federal spending, its own funding reached nearly $40 million within the administration’s first month. The department’s ambiguous leadership structure has also led to legal challenges and judicial scrutiny regarding the legitimacy of DOGE’s actions. Our reporting team has examined the recruitment of attorneys, including former Supreme Court clerks, who have been brought onto the DOGE team as it undertakes significant initiatives across various government agencies. The department’s actions have led to legal challenges, with several groups alleging its operations may be unlawful. These disputes have the potential to escalate to the Supreme Court, highlighting the critical role that these lawyers may play in navigating the complex legal landscape surrounding DOGE’s activities.During this virtual event, ProPublica’s reporting team will review what they’ve learned about the inner workings of DOGE and answer your presubmitted questions. Submit your question below when you RSVP.Speakers include:Ginger Thompson, ProPublica managing editorRonnie Greene, ProPublica senior editorAvi Asher-Schapiro, ProPublica reporterChristopher Bing, ProPublica reporterAnnie Waldman, ProPublica reporter

Defending the Ballot Box: What It Takes to Digitally Protect an Election
With a new election around the corner and last election's voting dramas still in our minds, security concerns around digital voting booths are at an all time high. Not only does a democracy require a secure voting system to function at all, but the voting public must be able to feel confident that the election has been handled safely and honestly. Without this trust, our nation’s public institutions could find themselves vulnerable. Despite concerns about criminal interference, a software-powered ballot box remains the most efficient and accessible form of voting that we have – and one that doesn’t look like it will go away any time soon. So how can we strengthen this system and foster confidence in the voting system? What does a truly secure ballot box look like? And is this something that should be modernized or improved upon for future elections? Join hosts Dan Lohrmann and Earl Duby in this election-themed episode of CISO Insights, to hear them and their expert guests take a sharp look at defending the ballot box.
